Playing Favorites :: World of Solitaire
I've been meaning to tell you about this for a while. I had sort of forgotten about it.
Then, the other day, someone (I cannot remember who so if it's you, please shout out) blogged about playing online games. It made me think of this.
Now, people relax in different ways. Some take a walk; some read a book. Some watch a show or just sit quietly and close their eyes.
I actually do all of these. But for me, the best relaxation (if I have the energy) is playing a calming online game.
Back in the day, I played Mahjong constantly. It was the Royal Games web site, which was taken down sometime last year and no longer exists.
If you follow the bread crumbs from what used to be Royal Games, you can play similar games at GameDuell, and they do have Mahjong, but it's not the same and I am not interested in getting used to a new version.
I loved the old one! The colors were so pretty, and you could mute the music and hear the clicks of the tiles, and it was timed so that you could try to outdo your own score.
The best part about such a game, to me, is that you can challenge your brain while still having time to just think about stuff.
Now, if you are like me, you don't always want to think about stuff. Sometimes the stuff you would think about will only frustrate you, and at a time like that it's best to clean out a closet or go and rough somebody up.
But if you're tired and need both absence of unnecessary noise and time to think, I have just the thing for you: World of Solitaire.
I don't remember anymore how I found this web site (and it is a site, not an app). Since I am always on my MacBook Pro, this is my ideal format.
World of Solitaire is the brainchild and baby of Robert, who has constructed a site with so many games and so many options, anyone even vaguely interested in solitaire will find a favorite.
In fact I wrote to Robert a few months ago, to thank him for his site, and to let him know that someday, I was going to blog about it. He asked me to let him know when I did, so later I'll be sending him a link to this post.
The games Robert offers are all solitaire, but who knew there were dozens of variations of this game? Not the pirate. And the site itself is extraordinarily well done without being fussy or pretentious.
Robert offers over one hundred games if you count the various versions of all the games (some have a strict version and a relaxed version; I always go with relaxed).
When you click on a game, a little video comes up and in it, Robert patiently explains exactly how to play the game. As well, within each game there are helps available as you play.
One of the things I treasure most about WoS is that, over on the right, when you click on a game to play it, appears the words 'Hide Ad' ... and if you click it, an ad that would have appeared there, goes away.
I always click to hide the ads.
Some of the games are hard. Really hard, so that to me, it's not fun because I like to win at least some of the time. Also because the purpose of playing is to relax, not to stress.
Here are my favorite games right now: Crazy Quilt (Relaxed) and Khedive.
And although those are my go-tos, I have in the past been known to play my fair share of Bear River, Pyramid (Relaxed) (Easy), Montana, Agnes Bernauer, and Raw Prawn.
As for my background, I have it set to Wood #4, which is to me the most relaxing color. My deck is Egypt.
I have tried other variations but I always return to these. The fun part is, you can choose what you like.
When you win a game, you get a huge round of applause, and cheers.
Unless you turn that off in the settings. Which I don't.
Here is my process when I want and need to relax. I climb into my new chair-and-a-half recliner that TG bought for me, for my birthday.
On my left settles Rizzo and, if she is out of her condo, Sweetness lights on my right (on my hip so that I cannot even use my right hand, if I'll let her, but usually down by my knee).
I open two tabs: one for World of Solitaire and one for YouTube.
On the YouTube tab I choose a video like this or this. Sometimes it's not music but just this.
I don't watch the video; I go back to my WoS tab and play a game or ten while listening to the music or nature sounds on low volume.
Sometimes I relax in my bedroom, in the leather recliner that used to be my mother's, with my Covered in Cotton throw that my girls gave me for Christmas, over my lap. (My blanket is The Ann; that was my mother's name.)
Rizzo lolls atop his own quilt, on my bed. Sweetness is not allowed into my room.
When I choose that venue, more often than not I play my music or rain videos on my flat screen so that the ambience fills the whole room.
In the wintertime, I may play this video. Which actually makes me warm.
But whether I'm out in the sun room in one recliner or in my bedroom in another, even if I'm wearing my AirPods and listening to a book, while I play my games, I slow down and think.
Or not. Whichever I feel like doing.
I'm not very competitive so this type of setup just suits me.
What games do you play? Do you prefer playing on your phone or your laptop? Would you rather play to win against an opponent, or just be relaxed and play for fun?
Please tell me in the comments. Or if you'd rather be quiet and take it easy, that's okay too.
And that is all for now.

I’ve never been a gamer of any sort. Well, I do like some board games, preferably trivia or word games. And I love huge jigsaw puzzles and crosswords, but I much prefer doing it real, instead of online.
For some reason, it’s becoming popular here to have card parties again, where people play euchre or other games I know nothing about. It reminds me of my grandma, who had lots of bridge friends! I miss her to this day.
This is SO interesting! Phil plays chess on Gameknot, and I play Words With Friends on Facebook. I have not heard of this one. I have a book with all the different kinds of solitaire! And my favorite was called Pigtail. Takes a bit to learn, but it is really fun! Your nails are gorgeous!
@Bijoux ... awwww! Yes back in the '50s and '60s and maybe even into the '70s, my in-laws played Bridge with friends. Or maybe it was Canasta, haaha! I wasn't there but I heard her talk about it. I am no stripe of a "gamer" either but this really is relaxing. TG prefers word puzzle games and he plays the silly music which he describes as "most pleasant" ... haaaaha! The only card game we own is Uno, and you don't want to play Dagny in that because she is ferocious. xoxo
@Ginny ... why thank you but they are press-ons, haaaha! I have gotten rather addicted to those, the kind with adhesive already added so you don't even have to use glue. It's just too easy and never will a chip appear in your polish! Pigtail! That is a game even Robert does not have. I've never played solitaire except on the computer but I think all the different variations are fascinating and fun! xoxo
I am a huge fan of Solataire and play it daily. My Favorite types of it are Spider and Freecell, but I play many types. I haven't heard of World of Solataire, nd will have to check it out. Thanks in advance!
@Mari ... you're going to love it! xoxo
Thank you for sharing this site. I'll have a look at it. The big guy and I play card games and board games a lot. It's a good way to spend an hour together and relax a bit plus it keeps our brains working...to a point. lol
I love that blanket and chair. It looks so cozy.
Have a great Saturday Jenny!!
I play solitaire and a brain game called Elevate on my phone but rarely play games on my computer. I will definitely give this one a look though! I am not a competitive person and like you, I don't like to lose! You sure sound comfy while you are playing your game!
P.S. How close are you to Mauldin SC?
@Lori ... I think you'd really like this! When you find a favorite game, it's so enjoyable. My chair in my room is SO cozy and I feel secluded, which is the best part. You have a great weekend my friend! xoxo
@Jeanette ... Yes do look up WoS because if you're relaxing and on your laptop, it's just the thing! I am one hour and twenty-four minutes from Mauldin! Please let me know when you're going to be there and if I can, I will drive up and have a cup of coffee with you and Rich! I would love that. xoxo
Oh Jenny, I could call you "evil" for introducing me to something new to do online! But I popped over to the World of Solitaire and they dealt me a game of just regular solitaire so of course I had to play it (I didn't win). Oh my gosh. I can't imagine all the games available!! You will have to let us know what Robert says when you share the link of your blog post with him. I only knew of a few games of solitaire. I have not heard of a lot you mentioned in your post. I marked the site and I'm going to check it out after April. I do like playing online games. I play Word with Friends. I "refuse" to start Wordle because I just don't know if I can add anything else on my busy schedule, lol. But this sounds fun and relaxing. I checked out the various videos you'll put on while you are playing. All great!
I had not played Mahjong but have heard of it. I remember my mom and friends getting together to play bridge occasionally. I do enjoy a good card game. I enjoy playing games in general lol. On the weekends I'll play Word Tornado through GamePoint. They have a lot of games offered there to play for free.
Playing games like this keeps us sharp in our minds I do believe!
Thanks for this post! I am definitely going to try some new games of solitaire in the months ahead.
And to answer your question, I do play Word with Friends on my phone but any game through GamePoint on my desktop. I like to play with people or play alone. Either or is fine :)
betty
I play online using my phone. I like the word games and those that make me think rather than the smash and bash kind of games that are pure luck. It is relaxing to me and I will often do it with a TV show running. lol.. Have a wonderful Palm Sunday- xo Diana
Hi,
I do not play any games on my phone or computer. I do enjoy playing games with my family and friends.I enjoy card games, trivia, monopoly and more.
Have a blessed Holy Week my friend.
Carla
@betty ... haaahaha you played some solitaire on WoS! It's such fun. I think you might enjoy learning some of the various games; I like it when I find one that is just challenging enough, but not too hard. Robert responded that it was fun to read about his site from the perspective of a player, and he said he hoped my readers would enjoy it. He's so nice. I'm not going to get started on Wordle either because I will go down the rabbit hole with that. I don't like playing anything on my phone. I have played and loved word games in the past, and that's all TG will do on his iPad, is word games. We're all trying to avoid dementia, haaahaha! xoxo
@Diana ... I hear you! No smash and bash for me either; I like to be forced to think. I hope you have a blessed Easter week. xoxo
@Carla ... the same to you my friend! xoxo
I sometimes get into a word game kick on my phone, but usually I open my Kindle and read. I cannot do more than 1 thing at a time. My elderly brain requires complete focus to the task at hand. You Tube, music, and a book or game all at one time would fry my brain! PS I don't know one ard from another.
@Barb ... Haaahaa sounds like reading is just perfect for you and that's a good thing, because I believe that reading is the greatest and most profitable leisure activity known to man. xoxo
