SkyWatch Friday: Kingdom by the sea
![Date Date](/universal/images/transparent.png)
I am a big fan of the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe. Someday I hope to visit Poe's grave in Baltimore, Maryland.
I'm especially fond of Annabel Lee with its romance and lyricism.
Read a poem every day! It will help you.

ANNABEL LEE
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee; --
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
She was a child and I was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love --
I and my Annabel Lee --
With a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, by night
Chilling my Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me:
Yes! That was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud, chilling,
And killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we --
Of many far wiser than we --
And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee: --
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea --
In her tomb by the sounding sea.
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849)

Oh, something else we have in common. Annabel Lee is my favorite poem ever. I think as a kid it was the first poem that I memorized. Our teacher made us draw and paint pictures to go with the poem as we memorized it, make big posters. Everyone's imagination was working and there were some great posters. She was a fine teacher too.
The metre of that poem is quite bouncy, considering the sombre story. I am a Poe fan too (are you surprised?) although more a fan of his stories than his poems.
Did you take the glorious photos on your latest trip to the coast?
Wow, it's been a while since I read this one. I had to memorize it for a class back in high school. I've always liked Poe too, and on a recent trip to the northeast ALMOST visited his home. It's a National Park site in a kind of sketchy neighborhood. :)
@Debbie ... really? That is amazing! I never get tired of reading Poe, and especially Annabel Lee. My favorite line is "... my darling, my darling, my life and my bride ..."
@Hobbit ... EAP does tend to bounce around the head and heart. I love the rhythms of his poems and I like his stories too, very much. As to the photos, the last two are from this year but the top three are from 2010. Same beach!
@Jessica ... next time you must go see the home of Poe! But in broad daylight, please!
What a wonderful post, you are so good for me. I've just been thinking I should be reading more poetry. Great photos as always.
Beautiful post, incredible skies!
I had a male teacher in school with a deep, beautiful voice and when I read this I could actually hear his voice in my head as he recited this to us.It was beautiful to me then and still is today. Another one he loved for us to do was The Raven. I still remember "Nevermore". And I do read a poem every day! Photos are beautiful too, and you did capture some very pretty sunsets! As always a wonderful post!!
Really nice shots! Great idea to pair them with Poe.
Beautiful poetry and your shots, too.
Regards and best wishes
