Buggy Ride
One evening last week, TG and I were out and about. As is often our custom, we stopped at Publix for a few grocery items before going home.
I make an oven-baked batch of brown rice nearly every day. I'd been buying two-pound bags of Mahatma rice but was running out too quickly for my liking.
So this time, I picked up a five-pound bag of Publix-labeled brown rice.
It looked normal in the store.
When we got home, I changed clothes while TG brought in the groceries.
By the time I had begun unpacking our purchases, the rice was ... well. It was crawling. With bugs.
(I'm glad I noticed it before I opened the bag and decanted the rice into a storage canister.)
I believe the creepy-crawlies were down in the middle of the bag, hanging out until the bag got shifted and shaken, riling them up.
It was so disgusting. You could actually hear them moving around.
TG took our rice back the next morning and was given a refund, plus three two-pound bags of Mahatma brown rice (free of charge).
As he left the store, the shelf was being cleared of all five-pound bags of Publix brown rice.
Bugs be gone!
But still. Next time you buy rice in a bag, shake it up. Wait a minute or two, then look it over.
Carefully.
It may be bugged.
And that is all for now.

Aaaagh! My skin is crawling just thinking about this. Yuck.
Now I must know - how do you eat rice every day? And tell me more about oven baked rice, please?
PS - I was anticipating reading about an actual buggy ride, taken on your vacation. :)
@Mari ... I love brown rice with red beans, which together form a perfect protein ... I'm making an effort to eat more plant-based although we still do eat meat 3-5 times per week. Brown rice doesn't spike the blood sugar like white rice does and I just love rice!
Here's my recipe (it's actually Alton Brown's recipe):
Preheat oven to 375
Add 1 Tbsp butter and 1 tsp salt to 2 and 1/2 cups boiling water
Pour the boiling water (I boil mine in a large Pyrex measuring cup in the microwave) over 1 and 1/2 cups rice
Cover tightly with foil
Bake at 375 for 1 hour and 15 minutes
Perfect rice every single time!
Let me know if you try it!
xoxo
Another question - do you do something with the red beans, or just eat them with the rice. I love red beans too, so this sounds like a winner.
@Mari ... straight out of the can! I usually mix dark red, light red, and black beans and just put them on the rice and eat it for a meal. Cheap, easy, meatless, and so delicious!
xoxo
Perfect!
PS - I like your new photo. Beautiful lady, inside and out.
Now I'll quit filling up your comments. :)
UGH--OH! How awful. I got flour one time that had mealy worms in it and thought that was the grossest thing ever. Reminds me of the childhood joke- What is worse than finding a worm in your half-eaten apple? Finding half a worm....lol xo Diana
@Mari ... thank you and please do not ever apologize for that! xoxo
@Diana ... aaaaarrrrrggghhhhhh! Nasty! Hahahahaaaa xoxo
Ewwwwwws
I may never eat rice again!
Yes, agree with Mari - love ❤️ your new picture
Xoxo
@Sally ... It's pretty gross. But thank you for the compliment, my friend! So good to see you. xoxo
Lucky you saw the crawlies before opening the bag! I wonder if this recipe would work for me at high altitude? I must give it a try. I normally have to soak the rice at least 1/2 hour before cooking it on the stove and have to use about 1/2 cup water more than is called for. HIgh altitude cooking of both pasta and rice takes some adjustments. You know, if you had used the rice with the bugs, you'd have more protein...ewww!
@Barb .... ewwwww is right! I know some people eat bugs but I'm not one of them. I think you should try baking your rice. It's so easy. I don't know about high altitude but maybe a bit more water ... the rice comes out so beautiful and tasty! xoxo
